Today the SHSU community will have the opportunity to feast freely in the diversity of the Office of Multicultural and International Student Services’ Unity Fest.
M.I.S.S will host the event as a means to unite people for Sam Houston’s Welcome Week activities. Program Organizer, Donielle Miller, believes that the event is an opportune occasion for person’s of different backgrounds to interact.
“Unity Fest is where we promote togetherness by giving free food and give-aways to everyone on campus through opening up a means for people to communicate with the others that they normally would not,” Miller said.
Unity Fest is an important event because it allows students from all backgrounds to interact on a social level. Although food is a major drawing card for this event, M.I.S.S.’s purpose is for more than just feeding college students.
“We’re committed to enhancing the SHSU experience through diversity education and programming,”Miller said. “We develop and cultivate multicultural programming to highlight generally underrepresented students.”
Today’s activities are a representation of several events that M.I.S.S will sponsor throughout the school year that will allow for the SHSU community to culturally fellowship. Their events not only offer savory dishes and free items, but provide an open arena for an array of subjects like next month’s “Talk with the Hand!” : Learning About Sign Language and November’s AIDS Awareness on Campus.
In addition to several individual programs M.I.S.S sponsors and co-sponsors over a few themed weeks where different activities take place. This semester students will have the opportunity to participate in culturally eventful weeks including UniDiversity Week: Gender and Society and the International Week in November.
Today free barbeque will be at the mercy of anyone who desires to partake in its goodness, and students will be able to exchange their differences while cleaning their plates. To get your first taste of diversity be at Unity Fest in LSC Mall Area between 11 A.M. to 1 P.M.
