SHSU Review deadline approaches

For budding writers and publishing hopefuls, Sunday, Feb. 1 is the deadline for any SHSU Review contributions. The Sam Houston State University Review is accepting literary submissions including short fiction, poetry, essays, and book reviews for its spring edition.

Dr. Scott Kaukonen, published writer and critic, asks all writers associated with the University to submit.

“We continue, like all literary magazines, to seek the highest-quality submissions that we can acquire. Though we’re open only to submissions from people connected to SHSU–undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff and alumni–there’s much creative work taking place on and around campus,” he said. “We’d like to provide a public space for that work to be shared.”

Dr. Kaukonen and the interns of the Sam Houston State University Review are excited to offer writers, published and unpublished, the opportunity to get their work on the page.

“The small literary journal is the place where many writers get their start–before the agents, before the book contracts, before Oprah,” Kaukonen said.

Those chosen for publication in the Spring edition of the SHSU Review will be invited to participate in a public reading at Austin Hall in April, an opportunity not only to personally share their own work, but to further publicize their skills as a writer.

Online submissions may be sent to [email protected], and postal mail is to be addressed to: SHSU Review, Dept. of English, SHSU, Box 2146, Huntsville, TX 77341. In addition to literary work, the review asks all artists to send images for possible cover art to the review via email or postal service.

Last year’s cover art was discovered in SHSU’s very own Art Department, and the interns and editors of the review hope to publish more work from Sam students in the spring 2009 edition.
