While most students were leaving for the Thanksgiving break, one 20-year-old student found himself in hot water after being caught stealing books from the on-campus bookstore last Tuesday.

“The individual had been identified previously because he had been suspected of theft earlier,” UPD chief Kevin Morris said. “The bookstore contacted us when he came in because they believed he had previously tried to sell books back that he had stolen.”

According to a press release on their website, UPD officer Lieutenent David Warner responded to the scene and discovered the Sam Houston State University student in posession of four text books worth more than $500.

Prior to the arrest, bookstore employees had checked the student’s schedule to determine if he was enrolled in the classes for the books he had attempted to sell back.

The student was charged with a Class A Misdemeanor with the offense of theft, according to the UPD press release, punishable by a $4,000 fine and up to one year in prison.
