On October 23-24, Sam Houston State University will be celebrating the document that formed the United States government and secured the rights and freedoms of American citizens, the Constitution.
Constitution Day is a required celebration of all education institutions that receive federal funds.
The celebrations are sponsored by the SHSU American Democracy Project, Department of History, Department of Political Science, and Dr. John de Castro, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Constitution Day was originally scheduled to be celebrated on Sept. 17, which is the day the Constitution was signed in 1787. Yet due to Hurricane Ike, the events had to be put on hold until October.
“The Constitution is the fabric of our nation; it’s what holds us together as Americans,” Frank Fair, philosphy professor and even coordinator, said. “So, I think it’s awfully important for us as American citizens to understand and appreciate the Constitution that our Founding Fathers gave us.”
