“Okay folks, no limits Texas Hold’em! Big blind 200, small blind 100,” announced dealer Eric Keck at the beginning of the Texas Hold’em tournament yesterday evening in the LSC. Poker tournaments are just one of many activities offered to students by the Kat Klub, located on the first floor of the Lowman Student Center.

Director of the Kat Klub, Gary Roark, started the poker tournaments years ago. According to sophomore and event coordinator for the Texas Hold’em tournaments, Kristie Crozer, Roark used to go to school at Sam Houston State University and put together the tournaments so that everyone could just have fun.

The competitions are held every two weeks on average and feature the game, Texas Hold’em, which has become immensely popular among college students in recent years. They are open to all students with any level of experience and there are no entry fees or cash prizes for winners.

Participants agree, however, that tournaments are a fun way to spend time while learning about the game.

There is no set limit on the number of students who can play in the tournaments, but the number of students usually who sign-up is in the 10 to 20-player range. Most of everyone at the tournament last night had years of experience playing on-line or with friends and play the game for run.

Players who win a tournament at the Kat Klub will only receive a t-shirt, but according to senior Daniel Lornsen, players who win then become eligible for the final tournament in May, where there is a chance to win a larger prize.

Future tournaments will be held tomorrow, Sept. 21st, Oct. 4th, 5th.18th and 19th from 5p.m. to 9:45 p.m. in the LSC.

The sign-up list for poker tournaments can be found at the front desk of the Kat Klub. The Kat Klub also holds tournaments for 8-Ball pool, 9-Ball pool, Omaha, Black Jack and Table Tennis, with varying entry fees.
