Last week, the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT) held the New Chief Development Program at the Blackwood Law Enforcement Management of Texas Center.

New police chiefs are required to attend this program within two years of their appointment. It is a 40-hour program that includes curriculum topics such as Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE), Roles & Rules and Cultural Race-Related Issues Affecting Contemporary Law Enforcement. Other topics include Budget Development & Management, Emotional Survival and Civil Liability Issues.

The New Chief Development Program is held three times a year and about 40 new chiefs joined the five-day program at Sam Houston State University.

The Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas was created by the 70th Texas Legislature in 1985. It is committed to providing education, training, research and service to customers in the law enforcement community in order to inspire excellence in leadership and enhance the effective delivery of law enforcement services.
