Mr. Sinatra may not be present next week, but that’s not stopping SHSU from kicking back Homecoming Week Vegas style. With “Viva Huntsvegas!” as the central theme, Homecoming Week is expected to be full of food, fun and spirit.

On Tuesday, Oct. 4 there will be a Ceramic Cup Workshop at 11 a.m. in the LSC Mall area and a Rock & Bowl at 9:30 p.m. at the Huntsville Lanes. On Wednesday, Oct. 5 the Homecoming parade will run on Sam Houston Ave. north from 19th Street and end in the Walker County Annex Parking Lot. After the parade, there will be the Sam Jam Homecoming Carnival at 8 p.m. in the Johnson Coliseum parking lot. Thursday, Oct. 6 there will be a Caricature T-shirt workshop at noon in the LSC Mall area and the Spirit of Sam Houston will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Pit. Saturday., Oct. 8 there will be the Homecoming Bearkat Alley Tailgate party from noon until the game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

“The Ceramic Cup workshop will be for the first 150 to create their own Homecoming keepsake, a personalized mug for them to keep,” Leah Mulligan, Director of Student Activities said. “The first 200 students to show up at the Huntsville Lanes for the Rock & Bowl get all-you-can-eat pizza and 3 hours of free bowling, you just need to bring a valid Bearkat One card. The Caricature T-shirt event will be for anyone who wants their face painted on t-shirts to keep.”

Many of the events are new, but some traditions have been popular for years, especially the Homecoming Parade and the pre-game tailgate.

“We hope that a lot of students incorporate the theme of Homecoming on their floats and banners,” Mulligan said. “We’re giving away prizes for the floats; first place gets $1000, second place gets $500 and third place gets $250. Prizes will also be given at the tailgate for Best Food, Most SHSU Spirit and Best Use of Homecoming Theme, all for $150.”

The rest of the event schedule can be found online at http://www.shsu.edu/homecoming/ which contains a large number of student and alumni activities alike. Sign-ups for the Homecoming Parade must be filled out by Monday Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. in the Student Activities office.

“Homecoming committee would like to invite all offices on campus to decorate next week using the Homecoming theme, ‘Viva Huntsvegas!'” Julia May, Homecoming steering committee member said.
