SHSU’S 125th Anniversary celebration makes this Homecoming especially significant and the university is pulling out all the stops. Various events and activities will offer students many opportunities to make happy memories.
Yesterday marked the beginning of an entire week of events with a Kickoff Rally at noon and a hypnotist at 6:00 p.m.
Events planned for today include the 125th Anniversary ceremony at Austin Hall at 11 a.m. (held at the coliseum if it rains) and the Faculty, Staff and Student March at 11:30 a.m. The 125th Anniversary Panoramic Photo will be taken at intramural field #2 at noon. The photo is becoming a tradition at SHSU. In 1978, 7,500 Bearkats turned out to pose for the Centennial Anniversary picture. The photo and other historic SHSU pictures will be on display at the Newton Gresham Library.
Other plans for Tuesday include “Glazin’ over Sam,” a ceramics activity at 12:30 p.m. in the LSC mall area and “Get Your Bowl On” at Huntsville Lanes at 9 p.m.
The Homecoming Parade will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and will begin at Sam Houston Avenue. Jason Gomez, Program Coordinator for Student activities, said the parade will “begin at the corner of Sam Houston and Bowers, go through town to 13th, hook over to University Avenue and end up back on campus.” It will include the “Homecoming candidates, student organizations, community members, cheer and dance teams, the band and the president and vice president of the university,” he said.
Sam Jam will begin at 8 p.m. in the Bowers Stadium parking and “a lot of fun,” said Gomez. The carnival event will be free to everyone.
On Saturday at 11 a.m., the Pre-Game with the President will be held at Austin Hall. Maggie Babcock organizes special events for the Office of the President.
“It’s a reception open to faculty, staff, students and the community. It’s a chance to meet the President and Mrs. Gaertner if they haven’t. It’s immediately after the open houses so groups can come over afterward.” Babcock added that the reception is a “great opportunity to at Austin Hall if they never have before.”
The tailgate party will be held at Bowers Stadium at noon, followed by the big event, the football game against Nicholls State at 2 p.m. At 7 p.m., SHSU will play Texas State- San Marcos in a volleyball game in the coliseum.
