For only the fourth time in 55 meetings between the two teams, the Sam Houston State women’s basketball team defeated SFA.
The Bearkats won in Nacogdoches, 71-61. Sam Houston State has won three of their four over SFA in Nacogdoches.
“I’m very proud of the kids. Last week, they didn’t practice very well, but this week, they practiced well for two days in a row,” SHSU coach Wooly Hatchell said after notching his first win over the rival Ladyjacks.
SHSU senior Stacy Allen poured in 27 points, Kelley Kramer added 13 points and Haley Kee had 11. Stephanie Trachier and Shauna Singleton both added eight points to help lead the Bearkats past the struggling Ladyjacks.
SFA falls to 2-4 in conference play and are 2-13 overall.
SFA has dominated the all-time services, winning 52 of the 56 games between the rival schools. But Wednesday, it was all Bearkats.
Only one Ladyjack scored in double figures Wednesday. Tiffany Perkins led the Ladyjacks with 14 points. The Bearkats held SFA to just 34 percent shooting from the floor for the game.
On Saturday, SHSU had three players score in double figures, Allen with 14 points, Erica Parker added 15 points and six rebounds, while Katrine Barclay scored 13 points. “Some of the girls weren’t getting the job done, and I was happy with the way girls like Jamie and Erica played when they came in the game,” Hatchell said.
The LadyKats lost to Louisiana-Monroe 79-68, on the road in their current four-game road trip.
The LadyKats were outscored 42-28 in the first half but came back with 40 points in the second half. “I am very proud of the effort we had tonight,” SHSU head coach Wooly Hatchell said. “That team that just beat us is going to beat a lot of people this season.”
The loss drops the Bearkats to 4-3 in Southland Conference play. They conclude a four-game road trip on Saturday in Thibodaux, La., against Nicholls State.
