Forum to discuss racism

Racial tensions that have flared over the last two weeks will finally have a chance to be ventilated tonight in a roundtable-style discussion airing on KSHU Channel 7 at 7 p.m.

NAACP president Calvin Davis, The Houstonian staff members Eric Barton and Randy Goins, Reloaded staff members Jamaal Bachelor, John Sargent, and Justin Brown, and SGA vice-president and Jason Plotkin took part in the discussion, moderated by RTV professor R.E. Davis.

The forum, proposed by R.E. Davis and put together by Bachelor, will allow for the participants to discuss the Davis’ accusations of racist contentallegedly found in recent issues of The Houstonian.

Bachelor has high expectations for the discussion.

“I’m very excited about it. Assuming that no one goes into fisticuffs, we can air out some of the issues that have been going on,” he said. Bachelor also suggested that the recent racial tensions are an annual thing.

“It seems that once a year, blacks and whites suddenly realize that they go here together and everyone gets stirred up for a couple of weeks,” he said. “Hopefully this year we can do something about it so that next year we can actually make some progress.”

Likewise, Calvin Davis is hoping that clarity can be brought to the issues at hand.

“I am hoping that we will be able to get our point across because a lot of people misunderstand our actions and believe that I am angry about the homecoming coverage in [The Houstonian],” said Davis. “That is not the case. Hopefully this will be able to clarify the issue on both sides.”

R.E. Davis feels that, if nothing else, this forum will be an opportunity for “all parties involved to have a chance at reasonable and intellectual discourse.”

“It doesn’t matter if it has an outcome,” R.E. Davis said. “I hope that all parties involved will come away with a better understand of each other’s viewpoints.

The forum will air at 7 p.m. tonight and at varying times throughout the remainder of the week.
