The Student Art Association and the SHSU Clay Club will host their annual Art Auction in memory of former art professor Kenneth Zonker. The auction will be held April 12 at 1029 12th St. in downtown Huntsville next to Huntsville Blueprint.
The preview prior to the auction will be from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. The live auction itself will begin at 7 p.m. All students, faculty, staff and SHSU alumni are encouraged to submit pieces to the auction. All forms and media of art such as paintings, sculpture and photography are accepted.
Pieces to be included in the auction should be submitted on April 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1029 12th St.
The artists will set the minimum bid prices and the proceeds will be split 60/40, with 60 percent going to the artist and 40 percent going to the Student Art Association and the SHSU Clay Club.
The money raised at the auction will be used by the groups for art department scholarships. One hundred percent of the profits from the faculty and alumni pieces sold will go toward the scholarship funds.
Two-dimensional works must be framed and ready to hang and artists with three-dimensional pieces will need to provide their own pedestals. The auction is open to the public and cash and checks will be accepted for payment.
This auction is an excellent opportunity for artists to display their work and make some money.
“It should be good,” said Sharon King, an assistant professor of art at SHSU. “We mailed out 800 invitations to faculty, alumni, city officials and those people who support the art community.”
The art department will need extra help setting up for the auction and will also need people to assist during the evening’s activities. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the auction should attend an art auction meeting on April 3 at noon in the art auditorium.

There will also be a graduating seniors exhibit from May 12-17 in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery with a reception May 17 at 3 p.m.
King and Tony Shipp, another SHSU assistant professor of art, will host an exhibit called Warehouse Erotica on April 24 at 8 p.m. in the former Campus Cleaners at 1416 Sam Houston Ave.
This will be a mixed media exhibit and anyone interested must call Shipp at 294-1324 or King. All entries for this exhibit must be submitted by April 18.
