It didn’t take long for the death chamber to see its first action of the new year. The state of Texas executed its first inmate of 2001 Wednesday night when 37-year-old Jack Wade Clark was executed by lethal injection just after 6 p.m. at the Walls unit in Huntsville. Clark, a Lubbock resident at the time of his crime, was put to death for the rape and murder of 23-year-old Melisa Ann Garcia in October of 1989. According to police, Clark stabbed Garcia and forced her into his car before sexually assaulting the girl as she lay in a semi-concious state and then stabbing her in the heart. Last year Texas executed a record 40 inmates.
