It seems like a Sam Houston State degree might be worth something after all.Thaksin Shinawatra, a 1978 SHSU graduate, was elected the Prime Minister of Thailand over the weekend after Thai voters opted for the Texas-educated telecommunications billionaire over the former conservative reform-minded prime minister Chaun Leepkai.Shinawatra earned his doctorate in criminology from Sam Houston State before going to Bangkok to serve as a policeman. It was there that he started building his fortune after forming a business to sell computers to the police department. The key to the former Bearkat’s campaign was a promise to give $23,000 to every one of Thailands 70,000 villages and to impose a three-year moratorium on interest payments to indebted farmers. Shinawatra was the candidate of the Thai Love Party. The newly elected prime minster could see a short term in office because of an indictment against him from December. He is accused of failing to declare all his assets, as required by law. If the constitutional court rejects his appeal (whose ruling is not expected for several months) Thaksin will be required to resign from office.Any professors or adminstrators who remember Shinawatra are asked to contact the Houstonian at 294-1505 to help with a feature story.Any professors or adminstrators that remember Thaksin are asked to contact the Houstonian at 294-1505 to help with a feature story.
