Sam Houston State stayed alive in the Southland Football League title chase with a 27-21 win at Nicholls State.The Bearkats (6-3, 3-2) are one game off the pace of McNeese State and Troy State with a co-championship the best they can hope for. Nicholls (1-9, 0-6) lost its ninth in a row after beginning the year with a win. SHSU managed 432 yards total offense, including 90 yards rushing by quarterback Brian Null to go along with a 248-yard passing day for the junior. Trailing 3-0 in the first, Willie Thomas, who finished with 94 yards rushing, picked up the first two scores of the game for the Bearkats. The first was a 1-yard run to put SHSU up for good while the second came on a 12-yard run in the second period. Alex St. Peter added a 32-yard field goal to put SHSU up 17-6 at the half and the two traded touchdowns in the third. SHSUs third-quarter score came on an 18-yard pass from Null to Thomas, who ended the game with 103 yards receiving on eight catches. Josh Son had a game-high 105 yards rushing for the Colonels.
