After six competitions this season, the women’s rodeo team holds the top spot in the Southern Region and the men’s team currently holds fourth place.
The men and women will be competing Thursday, Friday and Saturday at a competition to be held at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.
“There’s only 110 points separating first and fourth place,” said rodeo coach Roger Walters, “In just one rodeo, the guys could also be in first place.”
One of the shining stars of the team this year is Yvan Jayne, a sophomore from Marseilles, France. He currently holds first place in the All-Around competition and qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo during his freshman year.
“We’re real proud of Yvan. He’s one of the best,” said Walters.
The team started practicing in their new outdoor arena one week ago after the lights were installed. “We practiced a few times here during the fall, before daylight savings time. It’s better because it’s not so hot and all of our stock is here,” said Walters.
May 23-25, the team will compete in the Regional Playoff Series in Hobbs, NM vying for the chance to make it to the College National Finals Rodeo to be held in June in Casper, Wyoming.
Other top rodeo athletes are Tyke Salazar, first place in Calf-roping, Morgan Figueroa, first place in barrel racing, and Britt Walters, first place in steer wrestling.
The first competition of the season was held at SHSU in September. After Thursday, the team will compete three more times in the regular season. They will be at Texas A&M in March, and Hill County and Wharton Junior Colleges in April.
