For all of you who made the New Years resolution to get in shape, here is your chance to get started on the right foot. The department of Recreational Sports is hosting “Bearkat Keys to Wellness,” unlocking your future, Jan. 29- Feb. 2. “Wellness week is a way for students to come out and try new activities that they have never experienced before,” said Laura Smith, recreational sports program associate.Each day of wellness week is full of free programs to introduce SHSU students, faculty and staff to a healthier way of life beginning next Monday morning with free bagels, fruit and muffins in the mall area starting at 7:30 am. Each day of wellness week has a different healthy theme. Monday is “Unlocking Nutrition Day” and features a program that will help participants dispel dieting myths. “Unlocking Fitness Day” is the theme for Tuesday with a tour of the Health and Kinesiology weight room and instruction on how to use the equipment. Polish up your dancing shoes because Wednesday is Latin Dance night. Come and learn how to salsa dance during Wednesdays “Unlocking Alternative Fitness Day.”Ever wanted to try yoga? Come by the HKC Thursday evening and improve your flexibility and strength during “Mind/Body Health Day.”Getting started on the road to a healthy lifestyle isnt the only reason to participate in “Bearkat Keys to Wellness.” Every time you attend a program, you have a chance to win a door prize such as a juicer, jump rope, heart rate monitor, yoga video and many other prizes. The drawing will be held Friday at noon. Smith said the Recreational Sports program is looking at adding fitness and wellness programs to its list of activities available in the HKC. Wellness week workshops will help to determine what programs are added in the future.
