A hard-fought battle went to the Aggies Tuesday when the Sam Houston State baseball team lost 5-3 after an impressive start by pitcher Ryan Herrera.Herrera, who has been a relief pitcher for the Bearkats this year, made his first start of the season going six and two-thirds innings against the 17th-ranked Texas A&M squad. He scattered four hits and four earned runs through the outing and handed out four strikeouts while only giving up first base twice to a walk and a hit batsman.”Herrera pitched great; he deserved to win the game,” said SHSU in fielder Lou Ferrell. “Since that was his first real start, it was even more impressive.I wish we could have scored more runs to back him up.”SHSU scored first with Buc Riva, but the Aggies later tied it up in the fourth. The Kats would have the lead one more time when Ferrell came across the plate.A&M put together a rally in the seventh to overtake SHSU with four runs, three coming off a two-out, pinch hit home run by Erik Schindewolf off relief pitcher Dustin Craig.Despite a 18-5 loss to the Aggies earlier in the season, the Kats came into this game with much more confidence after a spring break full of success.”I think this time we had great confidence and knew we could win this ball game,” said SHSU pitcher Nathan Brewer. “I think the seven- game win streak, including the two wins over Rice, really made us believe we could play with anybody.””Other teams know that we will play them tough,” Ferrell said about the competition down the road. The Bearkats are preparing for the three-game conference series against Southeastern Louisiana this weekend at Holleman Field. They play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon and one on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
